UE Megaboom 3 is a supremely portable, powerful wireless Bluetooth speaker. The device blasts heavy, clear & immersive 360 – degree sound with deep thundering bass. Everything is balanced so meticulously that you can hear every note.
UE Megaboom 3 is an insanely waterproof, drop-proof & dust-proof device, which is always ready to rock any adventure. From breakdancing into the pool to snowboarding in the mountains, Megaboom 3 has your back.
With the all-new magic button, now you can play, skip, and pause songs with just a single touch. With all this awesomeness, the device is wrapped in a stunning, Two-Tone, high–performance fabric.
And also, the ultimate party starter has been redefined.
Design & Controls
UE Megaboom 3 is a tall cylinder, nearly 9 inches in height, just 1.5 inches more than the standard UE Boom.
The device has ditched the vertical rubber stripe on the front behind the (+,-) sign, which looks good and gives a more uniform 360 – degree sound.
There is a beautiful, grippy texturing, Two-Tone looking, high–performance fabric wrapped around the outside, which feels fantastic.
On top, there is a new “Magic Button” alongside Bluetooth and a power button. The magic button is used to play, pause or skip songs.
The magic button has a few tricks. When you press and hold it, the speaker will turn on, connect to your device automatically, then start playing with one of your four apple music presets. Hold again. You will see that it cycles to the next playlist.
There is a “hang loop” around the back, which is used to connect the speaker to the side of a backpack, a tree branch, or in any other structure while listening. Some carabiner or rope will be needed to do this.
Thankfully UE Megaboom 3 speaker sounds just as punchy, fun, and capable as we have expected from an Ultimate Ears Bluetooth speaker. It provides a hugely enthusiastic sound that favors excitement while keeping a close eye on the balance.
The immersive 360 – degree sound is imposing, that quickly fills a room. The sound is satisfyingly solid, a great helping of detail has well–defined edges, and a great sense of rhythm.
According to the public demand, UE Megaboom 3 has been given a bass boost, with UE enhancing its passive radiator to give deeper bass.
Compared with its stablemate Alexa – powered Megablast, which is now available at a similar price, UE Megaboom 3 surely sounds a lot punchier and bassier.
The Megablast sounds distinctively coarser & thinner in the treble next to the new speaker, while UE Megaboom 3 is filling in the lower midrange to make it a smoother and weightier listen.
Basslines are deeper, can charge the song along with more grip and momentum, and the solidity also runs through the entire frequency range.
Overall, Megaboom 3 is more enjoyable, reliable, and more comfortable to listen to than Megablast.
Waterproofing & Floating
All speakers of Ultimate Ears are waterproof, but Wonderboom was the only one that could float. Now the Boom 3 and Megaboom 3 also joined the party.
If you throw or chuck your Megaboom 3 in a pool, it will rise to the top and then float on its back. The music will still play, and the most exciting part is, the device will spew out water while it’s at it.
I just loved this feature on the Wonderboom & now really glad to see it here too.
UE Megaboom 3 also has ingress protection. It has a waterproof rating of IP67. With this, it can be submerged at a depth of 1m for 30 minutes and can survive dust being thrown at it – which is excellent for the beach or any other similar places.
Like UE Boom 3, Megaboom 3 also has BT 5.0 connectivity. That means it is reliable up to 45 meters.
I have tested its BT 5.0 connectivity with my device, which also has a BT 5.0 connectivity. Anyway, in my experiment, It was 100% ok for about 30 meters. But then it started dropping gradually. But still, I think their claim is fair enough.
According to UE, Megaboom 3 can be played for 20 hours on a full charge. I think it can give more backup.
We have used it for more than 10 hours on a program at a low and moderate volume. Trust me; the device still had 77 percent of charge! So you can easily understand that the battery life of UE Megaboom 3 is too good.
This portable speaker needs two and a half hours to be fully charged up. So if you want to take it somewhere with you, make sure that the device has enough charge for your entertainment.
Connectivity & Other Features
Megaboom 3 connects with your devices via Bluetooth, instead of wifi, as expected from a rugged and portable speaker. The speaker can pair two sources at the same time and can connect up to eight overall.
Using the “Megaboom” app, multiple speakers can be connected to amplify the sound. Over 150 speakers can be combined by using the app.
As I said, UE Megaboom 3 has a wireless range of 150 feet. So you rely on it anywhere near 150 feet.
To charge the UE Megaboom 3, there is a micro – USB port, which was moved from the bottom to the back. The location is now much better.
Manufacturers need to start adding USB – C cable to the devices, rather than micro – USB. UE explains that micro – USB choice was made because it is not ready to adopt USB – C. But the question is how the market will adopt it if manufacturers refuse to add supports?
In my opinion, it is frustrating to see manufacturers releasing a new product in recent time, but opt to include micro – USB instead of USB – C. Because anyone who picks it up will likely want to keep it around for a few years, which is tough with the micro – USB.
However, as an alternative, UE added support for their wireless Power Up charger, which came out with their speakers’ Megablast line.
