Ultimate Ears Boom 3 was first released in August 2020. It is a super-portable wireless Bluetooth speaker, specially built for adventures. UE Boom 3 rocks immersive 360 degrees sound with deep bass. All are so carefully balanced that you can hear every note.
UE Boom 3 is completely waterproof, dustproof & drop-proof. So you can bring the vibe anywhere. Besides, Boom 3 features the all–new magic button so that you can play, pause & skip songs directly on the Bluetooth speaker.
Again, this device is wrapped in a stunning, high–performance fabric that shimmers. And the ultimate go-anywhere speaker just got more ultimate.
Design & Build
Ultimate Ears Boom 3 is a cylindrical, tower-type Bluetooth speaker that stands 18 cm tall with a 360-degree output of sound. It can easily fit into the water bottle carrier of a bike or in the drinks holder of a car.
A high-density woven fabric protects the inner part of UE Boom 3. You can choose from a range of six different colors, whether red, black, or any other color.
The device has a waterproof rating of IP67, which means it can be submerged into 1 meter of water for 30 minutes without any damage. It also floats, so if any accident happens, you don’t have to worry about the device sinking to the bottom of a lake.
UE Boom 3 also has a perfect dustproof rating. You can take this to the beach, to the desert, into the shower, fishing in the car, etc. Still, you will see that the device is performing correctly.
There are huge +/- buttons, which control the volume. The buttons are used to be housed on a plastic strip that ran down the speaker. But now, they are housed on the grille itself.
There are three buttons on the top that controls the power of play/pause, track selection, and pairing. They are all different in size. But once you can understand which button controls what, then things will be easier for you. You can find and use them, even in the dark.
A hanging loop is attached to the top of the gadget. It may not be huge but certainly can become a more useful accessory if combined with a carabiner.
UE also claims that Boom 3 is drop-proof. Well, I am the eyewitness of it. My device survived the 80cm drop from a patio table onto a tiled floor without any issues.
Sound Quality
The UE Boom 3 Bluetooth speaker’s frequency range is (90 Hz – 20 kHz), and the maximum sound level is 90 dB. It’s very much similar to Boom 2. So if you had been in love with the fun sound signature of its predecessor, you would surely love the sound of Boom 3 too.
The UE Boom 3 has a pronounced mid-bass slam, which is both precise and controlled. It is not overpowering; that’s why the speaker doesn’t sound like a bassy mess. But it is not able to reach into the very lowest notes either.
The mids are pushed back a bit and recessed too. But that doesn’t mean the speaker sounds terrible. Instead, it creates a warm sound profile, which is very much suitable for mainstream music.
The highs roll-off at the top end, which creates a softish sound. In various songs, the instrumentals aren’t as detailed as they have to be. I would have loved a little more detail here.
The speaker provides a 360 degree sound, which is quite big enough for small outdoor gatherings or even a medium–sized living room. The instrument separation of the speaker is impressive too. Overall, it’s perfect according to its size.
Bluetooth Version
The device’s Bluetooth version is BT 5.0. UE claims that Boom 3 has a maximum range of 45 meters. I have tested its BT 5.0 connectivity with my Galaxy Note 9 (with BT 5.0). It was reliable up to 30 meters; then it started dropping gradually. Still, their claim is theoretical under perfect conditions, so it is fair enough.
Portability & Durability
The portability and durability of the UE Boom 3 are worth mentioning. UE just nailed the art of portability. It is highly portable, lightweight and its cylindrical design makes it a perfect companion on the road. You will love to grab the UE Boom 3 and can take it anywhere with you.
It is super secure with advanced wrapping and comfortably fits into one hand. Some people might claim that Bose Soundlink Revolve is the best-looking portable Bluetooth speaker. But don’t think that it will be much better than UE Boom 3.
Battery & Charging
Ultimate Ears claims 15 hours of continuous playback, which might be acceptable if it can live up to that. I was not able to use more than 12.5 hours while playing at about 75% volume. Though it is decent enough for most day trips, I am still a bit disappointed in this department.
Rather than the modern Type – C USB, charging is through a micro – USB port. I don’t know why few companies are still going with the micro – USB ports when almost all devices switch to Type – C USB. UE has to change to Type – C to run with the flow.
Connectivity
As I mentioned, the device doesn’t seem to have any drop issues or shutters. As long as you stay within 50 feet, there is nothing to worry about it. It even gets the job done near 100 feet, having no walls in the way.
Then there is the Boom app, which is useful and adds functionality. It has a necessary EQ, so you tweak the sound of the speaker according to your choice. Also, it lets you save up to four EQ presets. That way, you can have one when you are at the beach with your friends and another when you are in the shower.
Besides, you can connect up to 150 other UE speakers through this app. It’s backward-compatible, so the previous Boom 2 can take advantage of this. Even you can use the app to turn your speaker into a musical alarm clock if you are tired of listening to your phone’s alarm clock every morning.

Then there is a magic button that helps you to switch between playlists without touching your phone. You will have to set this up in the app. Then controlling your music will be very easy. You are playing/pausing with a single tap and a double-tap for skipping to the next song.
