Are you worried about bad weather? Don’t worry, JBL Flip 5 is completely waterproof and a lightweight Bluetooth speaker that goes anywhere. The device can stand vertical or horizontal and be brave with your selection from 11 different colors.
Besides, you can pair two JBL party boost–compatible Bluetooth speakers for stereo sound or you can even link multiple JBL party boost–compatible Bluetooth speakers for creating a giant party.
Design & Build Quality
JBL Flip series is very much famous for being tough. The series started out being splashproof and gradually made the jump of being completely waterproof. It’s the same in JBL Flip 5’s case.
JBL Flip 5 is wrapped in a durable fabric material, which gives it an IPX7 rating. So, it can survive being submerged up to 3 feet in the water. There is a tough rubber on both ends of the speaker, which protects the exposed bass radiators.
You will find the Bluetooth pairing button & the power button along with the USB – C input for charging the speaker up down the back of the speaker. Both buttons have a light around them for when the speaker is on and connected to a device.
It’s effortless to figure out the buttons. I enjoyed the black-on-black look. If the color of the buttons is white or any other color, it would be much easier to use.
The built quality of the JBL Flip 5 is as good as a $100 Bluetooth speaker can be. There is a small loop built into the speaker that comes with a string. So, you can easily hang it from things like branches or showerheads.
The design of the speaker remains almost the same as JBL Flip 4. It is still cylindrical and weighing at about 540 grams. It can be fit perfectly in the water bottle pocket of any backpack.
As I mentioned, the device comes up in 11 different colors. So you can easily pick your required one – whether it is black, red, pink or any other color.
JBL Flip 5 may not be the 360-degree speaker like many of its competitors, such as UE Boom 3. But it delivers good quality of sound.
JBL Flip 5 has got the guts to deliver loud sound and provides excellent bass, usually lacking in small Bluetooth speakers. So, don’t be fooled by Flip 5’s small scale.
It’s not the most precise, cleanest sound in the world, but it will surely give you a decent wallop of sound according to its size.
The device possesses an excellent quality, better trebles, with a more robust and direct sound. It will surely help you to bring the party anywhere.
The device gets plenty loud, measuring a maximum volume of 96 dB. That’s quite louder than Flip 4. But unfortunately, it got a bit distorted at that level. The sound was better at around 85 dB.
Portability & Durability
To be loud and sounding better, Flip 5 has to sacrifice a bit of portability. But it is less than many other comparable speakers.
With a waterproof rating of IPX7, the device can easily handle big splashes, heavy downpours, and even a complete dunking into the pool or lake. Its weight is not exceptionally light, but not heavy either.
You don’t have to worry about throwing it into your bag for a stroll down at the lake or even a day at the beach. It can be your great companion whenever you are on a car drive.
Though JBL Flip 5 is noticeably more significant than some of the models, you will still love to carry it with you whenever you are going on a long walk or hike, even if you are loaded with stuff.
The Bluetooth version of JBL Flip 5 is Bluetooth 4.2. I have tested its BT 4.2 connectivity with my phone. It has paired easily with my phone and kept a strong signal near about 75 feet distance.
It’s a bit disappointing that Flip 5 features BT 4.2 rather than the latest BT 5.0. I think all the brand manufacturers must include the latest version of Bluetooth.
Though there isn’t much difference between BT 5.0 and BT 4.2. At least not for a portable Bluetooth speaker. It’s just that you will get slightly better connectivity for most of the audio applications and can get more range.
This compact Bluetooth speaker is powered by a 3000 mAh Li-ion battery that offers 12 hours of continuous playtime, just like the Flip 4. But It provides much more than their claim. I have used it for more than 5 hours at a medium volume, it still had 4/5 of the full charge.
Some people claim that they have used this device for 27 hours without charging it. Can you believe it? Seriously, I haven’t seen anyone have any qualms about this speaker’s battery life.
The connection strength of JBL Flip 5 is somehow solid. But I had a few problems while playing music somewhere in my apartment on my mobile. The issue was that it required powering the speaker on and off before resuming the playback normally.
While testing twice, the audio just began to skip and stutter uncontrollably, which was annoying. Merely powering off the speaker may fix the issue. But that’s not something you would love to deal with.
Unfortunately, there was a considerable lag while watching youtube videos. Besides, the audio never synced up with what the person was saying. And JBL dismissed the 3.5 mm input, so there’s no real way around this issue. It isn’t enjoyable.
JBL Flip 5 provides the party boost mode, which I think one of the most useless features of JBL speakers. If you press the dedicated party boost button on the speaker, you can pair a second JBL speaker to add more life to your party or just for stereo sound.
I don’t know whether anyone buys more than one speaker or not. But if you want to buy a second speaker, then you may find this feature useful.
It’s true that whenever I went on a trip or hike, JBL Flip 5 was always there for my company. But if you want a speaker that will always power up your parties, then I will suggest you to invest in something like JBL Boombox or the UE hyperboom.
From Where You Can Buy JBL Flip 5?
I don’t know whether it is available in every country or not. But you can buy it from the following markets :
- Amazon ( $89.95)
JBL Flip 5 is the simplest soul with Bluetooth – only playback and modest features. But if you want to have a rugged, durable, great-sounding portable Bluetooth speaker and can sacrifice hands–free call and voice control functionality, then you will not be disappointed by using it.
