An echo–canceling and a built-in – noise speakerphone gives you crystal clear calls with just a press of the button. The rugged rubber housing, upgraded and durable fabric material protects your speaker on all your adventures.
Design & Build
At first glance, you may not find any difference between Clip 3 and the previous one. But if you notice clearly, you will find subtle differences between the two of them.
Like Clip 2, Clip 3 also has a carabiner. But instead of being a small metal triangle hooked onto some hard plastic, this one is built into the speaker’s frame.
JBL Clip 3 also has three playback buttons like the previous version. The difference is now, you will find them embedded in the front fabric of the speaker as opposed to the small notches around the edge.
Another significant upgrade of JBL Clip 3 is around the speaker’s back, which is now a solid plastic rather than a cut-out for a 3.5 mm cable. As there is still a 3.5 mm input, so if you want to the plugin, you have to provide your line.
You will be amazed to know that the speaker is just as challenging as his predecessors. Again as it is entirely waterproof, so you can submerge it in up to 1 meter of water, thanks to its IPX7 build.
The carabiner being built into the frame gives overall a bit more rugged feel.
As I mentioned, JBL Clip 3 is available in 7 different colors. Be brave with the color selection and pick the best one for you.
Let’s make it very clear that JBL Clip 3 isn’t going to impress the audiophiles. But it certainly can do enough justice to your favorite tune to get you singing alongside.
JBL Clip 3 sounds relatively thin compared to most Bluetooth speakers available in the market. There is a lack of bass power. Also, higher frequencies may sound a bit tinny and harsh.
However, according to its size, JBL Clip 3’s sound is very much impressive. Even it sounds fuller than many other super–compact models on the market.
Indeed, JBL Clip 3 isn’t going to provide an exceptional or refined listening experience. But situation wise it can be more convenient, where more capable speakers may not be so.
Though JBL Clip 3 is one of the smallest Bluetooth speakers on the market, it provides a classic sound quality. The speaker is not big enough but is actually a few inches thick.
When you clip it to your cloth or backpack strap, it sits nicely, but it sticks out in such a way that it shows its bulk. The device isn’t cumbersome, but surely you will feel something if you treat it like a keychain.
It may be a personal preference, but I felt that, instead of letting the speaker hanging with your bag, it’s better to put it right into the front pocket of your bag.
This particular package comes with a substantial travel case, which is a really lovely addition. This beautiful case has a super – soft lining and a neoprene–style shell to protect your overall investment. But the problem is putting the speaker into the topic almost doubles its weight in every dimension.
All in all, the device is great for those who want something small but portable.
If we talk about Bluetooth technology, JBL Clip 3 offers Bluetooth version 4.1, known as Bluetooth Smart. BT v4.1 means it has a standard range of 10 meters, which is spot on.
I never had any problems while using this version of Bluetooth. Instead, I realized that a 10-meter range is more than enough for my average use.
IEEE Digital Library claims that BT v4.1 improves the performance of device connectivity, especially with internet settings. It is a fantastic technology that presents a mature device class for JBL Clip 3, undebatable.
JBL claims that Clip 3 has a battery life of 10 hours. Their claim seems to be right in our test. It lasts a minimum of 18 hours before finally succumbing to exhaustion.
That is more than enough time for a weekend holiday trip or adventure or even a night out at the bonfire, right?
Besides, Clip 3 is powered by a 1000 mAh battery. It allows the device to have a continuous playtime of 10 hours after a full charge. The run – time is improved than the previous Clip 2, which was nearly 8 hours.
Another critical point is the device takes three hours to be fully charged up. So before going on any trip make sure that your device gets enough time for charging.
Connectivity & Other Features
When you first turn the device on, it enters into the primary Bluetooth pairing mode. Find out clip 3 from your device’s menu option and pair it up. In my case, Clip 3 instantly appeared on my phone, and the pairing happened in a concise time.
You will find a labeled Bluetooth mode that will allow you to re-enter pairing mode on-demand to connect to any other device.
The connectivity specs are very standard according to the price. The protocol chosen here is BT v4.1, which is a bit backdated comparing to the latest BT v5.0. But as I mentioned, it worked perfectly in my case. BT v4.1 is fully serviceable, even at 12 – 15 feet away.
I have used Clip 3 for a few zoom calls & found that the sound quality was leaping. The sound is slightly more transparent on the microphone front and better than my laptop speaker ( which was expected).
Overall, I loved the connection stability of Clip 3.
